A286 Stainless Steel per AMS 5731 is a solution treated specification of Stainless Steel A286. The treatment includes heating to 1800 °F (980 °C) for one hour, followed by oil or water quenching. AMS 5731 has many favorable properties, including excellent strength at high temperatures, excellent corrosion resistance up to 1300 °F (700 °C), and low-temperature non-magnetic strength, down to -320 °F (-196 °C).

Thanks to its unique properties, A286 Stainless Steel per AMS 5731 finds use in the aircraft industry. The alloy is mainly used to manufacture jet engine components, industrial gas turbine parts, non-magnetic cryogenic components, superchargers (automobiles), tanks, piping, pumps, heat exchangers, etc.
