AMS 6488
AMS 6488 is the premium-grade SAE Aerospace Material Specification for H11 chromium hot-work tool steel in bar and forging forms, produced by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) for maximum cleanliness. VAR processing of H11 significantly reduces the density of non-metallic inclusions that initiate fatigue cracks in high-cycle loading environments — particularly important for aerospace fasteners at 280,000 psi that are subject to hundreds of thousands of load cycles in the service life of an aircraft. The improved cleanliness of AMS 6488 versus AMS 6487 translates directly to extended fatigue life and reduced fatigue life scatter in finished aerospace fastener components.
AMS 6488 is the premium-quality H11 specification used for the most demanding fastener and structural forging applications, where the investment in VAR processing is justified by the safety implications of fastener fatigue failure in primary aircraft structure. Its exceptional combination of 280,000+ psi strength with Charpy V-notch toughness of 15–30 ft-lb at HRC 48–52 makes it uniquely suited to applications where both extreme strength and resistance to brittle fracture under dynamic loads are simultaneously required.
AMS 6488 meets the same mechanical property requirements as AMS 6487 but with more restrictive cleanliness limits per AMS 2300 instead of AMS 2301. The impact on fatigue life is significant: in rotating bending fatigue tests, VAR H11 typically demonstrates 2–4× longer life at equivalent stress levels compared to air-melt H11, with substantially reduced scatter — enabling tighter safety factor specifications and potentially lighter fastener designs in weight-critical aerospace primary structure.
- Highly stressed primary structure aerospace fasteners at 280 ksi
- Aircraft structural pins in primary fuselage and wing attachments
- High-reliability die casting dies for critical aerospace casting production
- Extreme-load structural clevises and attach fittings
- Aerospace weapons system structural fasteners at extreme cyclic loads
Certified Material for Critical Service
AMS 6488 certifications include all requirements of AMS 6487, plus mandatory VAR melt process documentation and cleanliness per AMS 2300. For primary structure fastener applications, additional requirements typically include Charpy impact testing at ambient and low temperature, macro etch of bar cross-sections, and statistical sampling of fatigue tests per the procurement specification. Full traceability from VAR melt to finished fastener is maintained per AS9100 requirements.
