HY-80 Steel
HY-80 is a high-yield-strength, low-alloy quenched and tempered steel with a minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi (80 ksi). It is the primary structural steel for U.S. Navy submarine pressure hull construction, selected for its combination of high toughness, weldability, and resistance to brittle fracture at low temperatures.
HY-80 is defined by MIL-S-16216 and must be produced by NAVSEA-qualified steel manufacturers. Its composition — containing chromium, nickel, and molybdenum — is carefully controlled to achieve the required strength and toughness balance.
Product Forms of HY-80 Steel
HY-80 is produced primarily in plate form for submarine pressure hull fabrication. Plate thicknesses range from 0.250″ to 6.000″ depending on the hull section and are produced to NAVSEA-qualified rolling practices.

HEAT TREATMENT OF HY-80 STEEL
HY-80 is supplied quenched and tempered to achieve minimum 80 ksi yield strength. Austenitizing at 1600–1700°F is followed by water or accelerated quench and tempering at 1100–1200°F. Post-weld heat treatment is required for welded hull fabrication to restore toughness in the heat-affected zone.
APPLICATIONS OF HY-80 STEEL
HY-80 steel is used for U.S. Navy submarine pressure hull plating, frames, bulkheads, and other structural hull components where high toughness combined with adequate strength is required at operating depths.
The high strength and good wear resistance of 15-5PH stainless steel make it a good choice for use in gears in the aerospace industry.
15-5PH stainless steel is also used for structural parts in the aerospace industry, such as fuselage frames and wing components.
15-5PH stainless steel is resistant to high temperatures and has good toughness, making it suitable for use in engine components such as turbine blades and exhaust systems.
These are tools that are used in the drilling and exploration of oil and gas wells. 15-5PH stainless steel is often used to make these tools due to its high strength and corrosion resistance. and corrosive environments.
