Nickel 601 per AMS 5870 - Sheet and Plate Specification
Nickel 601 (UNS N06601) per AMS 5870 is an austenitic nickel-chromium-iron alloy with outstanding heat and corrosion resistance. AMS 5870 calls out Nickel 601 in sheet and plate forms for applications requiring long-term strength along with oxidation resistance up to 2200 °F (1200 °C).
The alloy forms a tightly adherent oxide layer that resists spalling even through severe thermal cycling. Mechanical properties are Characterized by high strength, excellent aqueous corrosion resistance, and fabricability make Nickel 601 an ideal material for heat treating, aerospace, and power-generation.
Key Properties
- Superior oxidation resistance in air up to 2200 °F (1200 °C)
- Excellent mechanical strength and creep resistance at high temperatures
- Good resistance to carburizing and sulfur-bearing atmospheres
- Maintains ductility and toughness after prolonged service
- Readily formed, welded, and fabricated using conventional techniques
Applications Of Inconel 601
Catalyst support grids in nitric acid production
Steam superheater tube supports
Thermocouple protection tubes
What is the difference between Nickel 600 and Nickel 601?
As compared to Nickel 600 alloy (UNS Designation N06600), Nickel 601 alloy has, in addition to increased chromium, an aluminum content which together provide outstanding resistance to oxidation. In addition, Nickel 601 alloy has good resistance to environments containing carbon and sulfur and this alloy also resists aqueous corrosion.
