ASTM B164 - Monel 400 & Monel R-405 Rod, Bar & Wire
According to ASTM B164, Nickel-Copper alloys in the form of rod, bar, and wire are available in the UNS N04400, known as Monel 400, and UNS N04405, known as Monel R-405. The Nickel-Copper alloys are known for excellent mechanical properties, superior corrosion resistance, and toughness in a wide temperature range.
Overview of Monel 400
Monel 400 (UNS N04400) is a nickel-copper solid-solution alloy that delivers exceptional resistance to corrosive environments including seawater, hydrofluoric acid, and alkaline solutions. It maintains its strength and ductility from cryogenic to elevated temperatures and is widely used in marine, chemical, and aerospace applications.
Monel R-405 (UNS N04405) is a free-machining version of Monel 400, offering the same corrosion and strength characteristics but enhanced machinability due to higher sulfur content. It is primarily used for automatic screw-machine stock and other precision-machined parts.

Ni ≈ 63–70% Cu ≈ 28–34% Fe ≤ 2.5% Mn ≤ 2% S ≤ 0.024% (R-405 only)
