AMS 5843 Specification - MP159 Cobalt‑Nickel Alloy Bars
The AMS 5843 specification has raised the bar for MP159 cobalt-nickel alloy bars that begin as VIM/VAR melted and then undergo solution heat treating, work hardening, and aging. The processes are carefully selected to tailor MP159 to deliver an exceptional balance of strength, corrosion resistance, ductility, and high-temperature properties.
In accordance with the AMS 5843 specification, MP159 alloy bars are subjected to heat treating and aging to control their microstructure to enhance their mechanical properties to enable reliable performance in critical applications, including aerospace, defense, energy, and industrial applications.
Applications of AMS 5843 MP159
MP159 bars produced per AMS 5843 are selected for components that demand exceptional strength, corrosion resistance, fatigue resistance, and microstructural stability. Typical applications include:
- Aerospace components – high‑load shafts, structural fittings, and actuator parts
- Defense & space systems – parts exposed to high stress and extreme environments
- Oil & gas equipment – structural parts and connectors in corrosive and high‑temperature zones
- Marine hardware – corrosion‑resistant components subjected to seawater and dynamic loads
- Industrial machinery – precision machined parts requiring long‑term performance
Performance and Fabrication of AMS 5843
The high toughness and high-strength properties of the alloy, as defined in AMS 5843, are the result of a combination of heat treatment and microstructural refinement. Initially, the alloy is subjected to a heat treatment known as solution heat treatment. This process ensures the alloy has a base microstructure. Subsequently, the work-strengthening process is employed. This process ensures the alloy has a high number of dislocations, thereby increasing the strength without compromising the toughness. Finally, the aging or precipitation hardening process ensures the alloy has a high tensile strength.
When the alloy is processed correctly, it can achieve ultimate tensile properties that are higher than 1830 MPa. The alloy also has high fatigue and corrosion resistance in a harsh environment.
