ASTM B160 : Nickel 200 & Nickel 201 Rod and Bar
ASTM B160 is the standard that includes Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 in forms such as rods, bars, and forgings. The alloys are purely nickel-based products that have been praised for excellent corrosion resistance, excellent thermal conductivity, and exceptional ductility.
Although Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 have similar properties, Nickel 201 is unique in that it has a reduced amount of carbon content (0.02% max). The composition of Nickel 201 is such that it can be used at temperatures above 600°F (315°C) to prevent carbon precipitation embrittlement.
Properties of ASTM B160 Nickel 200 & Nickel 201
- Corrosion Resistance: Outstanding resistance in neutral, alkaline, and mildly oxidizing environments.
- High Ductility & Toughness: Easily formed, machined, and welded for custom fabrication.
- Thermal Conductivity: Excellent heat transfer properties ideal for heat exchangers and process equipment.
- High-Temperature Strength: Nickel 201 maintains integrity up to 1250°F (677°C).
- Non-Magnetic & Chemically Pure: Reliable for electronic and aerospace applications.
Applications of ASTM B160 Nickel Alloys
In the aerospace industry, this means parts for the engine, brackets, and structural connectors. In the chemical processing industry, it means reactor vessels, piping, and evaporator systems. For the marine industry, it is heat exchangers, pumps, and non-seawater-resistant fittings. For the electronics industry, it is non-magnetic components for sensors and instruments. For the power generation industry, it is corrosion-resistant components for high-temperature applications. Nickel 201 is also listed in the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code for use in the construction of pressure vessels.
