Stellite 6B - Cobalt Alloy for Wear-Resistant Aerospace Applications
Stellite 6B is a cobalt-chromium-tungsten-carbon hard alloy with outstanding resistance to wear, erosion, and corrosion at elevated temperatures. Unlike most metals that are selected for strength or weight, Stellite 6B is chosen specifically for its tribological properties — the ability to maintain a hard, wear-resistant surface in sliding, erosive, and abrasive contact conditions at temperatures up to 600°C (1112°F).
Stellite 6B wrought plate and sheet is available as a fully dense, fine-grained material with improved ductility compared to cast Stellite, enabling tight-tolerance machining of complex wear parts that cannot be produced by casting. It is used in aerospace valve seats, knife-edge seals, turbine wear pads, and other sliding contact applications where a hardness of approximately 40 HRC and excellent corrosion resistance are required simultaneously.
Material OverView
Stellite 6B (nominally 30% Cr, 4.5% W, 1.5% C, balance Co) achieves its wear resistance through a hard chromium carbide phase dispersed in a tough cobalt-chromium matrix. The high chromium content provides corrosion and oxidation resistance, while the carbide network provides the hardness (approx. 40 HRC) that enables use in sliding metal-to-metal contact without galling or seizing.
