AMS 5641 covers 303 Stainless Steel bars and forgings. It’s a free-machining, austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel with added sulfur, which makes it easier to machine. You’ll see this 18-8 stainless steel all over the screw machine industry, especially in parts that need precise shapes—think shafts, valves, and fittings.
Type 303 under AMS 5641 stands up well to corrosion in everyday air and in environments that aren’t too harsh. In its annealed state, it doesn’t attract magnets, but if you cold work it, you might notice a bit of magnetism creeping in. One thing to keep in mind: because of the sulfur, AMS 5641 303 isn’t a good pick for high-pressure vessels or containers.
