410 Stainless Steel
410 Stainless Steel has a composition of 12% chromium, which gives it the quality of a martensitic stainless alloy designed to work in situations that require high strength, adequate ductility, and moderate corrosion resistance. The ability of this alloy to withstand stresses and maintain dimensions makes it an adequate choice for situations that require precision.
This alloy has the ability to be strengthened by heat treatment, which gives it adequate balance of both hardness and toughness, coupled with adequate corrosion resistance to work in mildly corrosive situations. Its martensitic composition allows it to be machined to precise dimensions, have adequate wear, and last longer.
Mechanical Properties of 410 Stainless Steel
- Tensile Strength: 75–95 ksi (typical, depending on heat treatment)
- Yield Strength: 40–60 ksi
- Elongation: 18–22%
- Hardness: 180–240 HB (annealed); can reach 50–55 HRC after hardening
- Service Temperature: Up to 600°F (316°C)
Applications of 410 Stainless Steel
410 stainless steel is widely used in applications where high mechanical strength and moderate corrosion resistance are required:
- Aerospace: Steam and gas turbine blades, buckets, bushings
- Valves and fasteners: High-stress valve components, pins, and shafts
- Nuclear and power generation: Reactor control rod mechanisms, turbine parts
- Industrial equipment: Petrochemical machinery, pump and compressor components
- General engineering: Machine parts, wear-resistant shafts, and precision tools
