Nitronic 40 per AMS 5656
AMS 5656 describes Nitronic 40 (also referenced as 21-6-9), an austenitic stainless steel with a high manganese and nitrogen content, which can be supplied in a solution heat treated condition from either AOD or AOD + ESR melting processes for bars, forgings, extrusions, or rings.
The advantages of Nitronic 40 include its excellent corrosion resistance, high strength, and superior toughness at cryogenic temperatures (very low temperatures), which make it suitable for critical applications in the aerospace, chemical and industrial sectors.
Applications of AMS 5656
AMS 5656 is commonly used in demanding applications, including:
- Aircraft engine components requiring high strength and corrosion resistance
- Pollution control and exhaust systems
- Chemical processing equipment exposed to oxidizing and corrosive conditions
- Cryogenic systems needing high toughness at low temperatures
What is Nitronic 40 ?
Nitronic 40, as known as 21-6-9, is an austenitic stainless steel that has been designed to be an extremely strong alloy in the annealed condition, to have excellent resistance against oxidation at elevated temperatures, and to have superior toughness even at cryogenic temperatures. Products manufactured from this material are either melted using one of two processes: AOD (Argon Oxygen Decarburization) or AOD + ESR (Electroslag remelting).

Certified Material for Critical Service
Nitronic 40 is certified for critical service applications, ensuring that all material supplied meets strict aerospace and industrial standards. Each batch is fully traceable with certification, guaranteeing compliance with AMS 5656, AMS 5595, and other relevant standards.
This certification confirms Nitronic 40 as a reliable choice for highly stressed components where failure is not an option, including turbine parts, structural components, and chemical process equipment.
