NITRONIC 60 per AMS 5848
AMS 5848 is a specification for an aerospace-grade material and is identified as Nitronic 60 Stainless Steel. It is available in various product forms such as bars, wire, forgings, extrusions, tubing, and rings. This alloy has good content in terms of manganese and nitrogen and falls in the class of austenitic stainless steels.
Applications of AMS 5848
Due to its combination of galling resistance, corrosion resistance, and high-temperature strength, AMS 5848 Nitronic 60 is commonly used in:
- Pump components and pump shafts
- Roller bearings and bearing cages
- Valves and valve stems
- Industrial fasteners and threaded components
- Mechanical assemblies exposed to friction and corrosion
What is Nitronic 60 ?
Nitronic 60 is a high manganese, high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel melted as AOD melt type with higher pitting resistance than 316L stainless. This alloy is hardenable to high strength levels through cold working. It has excellent oxidation resistance and can be used at high temperatures upwards of 1800oF. Typical applications include pump components and roller bearings.
