AMS 4993 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Sintered Powder Compacts
AMS 4993 is the specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy sintered powder compacts produced by powder metallurgy (P/M) processing. Powder metallurgy compacts are manufactured by pressing pre-alloyed titanium powder into a near-net-shape die, then sintering at elevated temperature to bond the particles into a coherent structural form with controlled porosity and mechanical properties.
P/M compacts per AMS 4993 enable production of complex titanium shapes with significantly reduced material waste compared to machining from wrought billets, buy-to-fly ratios approaching 1:1 versus 10:1 or higher for machined wrought titanium. Applications include complex brackets, housings, and structural fittings for military and commercial aerospace programs where near-net-shape processing is economically justified.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
