AMS 4998 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Pre-Alloyed Powder
AMS 4998 is the specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy pre-alloyed powder used as feedstock for powder metallurgy (P/M) consolidation and additive manufacturing. Pre-alloyed powder is produced by inert gas or plasma atomization of molten 6Al-4V titanium, yielding spherical particles with the target alloy composition already achieved in each particle, eliminating the processing variability of blended elemental powder approaches.
Titanium powder per AMS 4998 is the starting material for hot isostatic pressing (AMS 4994 compacts), conventional press-and-sinter operations (AMS 4993), and select additive manufacturing processes. The specification controls particle size distribution, chemistry, oxygen content, and flowability to ensure consistent processing behavior across all downstream consolidation routes and reliable final part mechanical properties.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
