SS 8455 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Sheet, Strip, and Plate (Sikorsky Aircraft)
SS 8455 is the Sikorsky Aircraft Specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy sheet, strip, and plate used in Sikorsky helicopter airframe structural panels and formed structural components.
6Al-4V titanium is extensively used in Sikorsky helicopter designs for rotor hubs, swashplates, airframe frames, and skin panels. Its combination of high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance under cyclic helicopter loading conditions makes it the standard titanium alloy for rotorcraft structural applications.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
