NAVSEA Specifications HY Steel – NAVSEA (Naval Sea Systems Command) develops and maintains material specifications for U.S. Navy surface ships and submarines. The HY (High Yield) series of structural steels — HY-80, HY-100, and HY-130 — are the primary materials for U.S. Navy submarine pressure hull construction, defined by MIL-S-16216 and related specifications.

NAVSEA Specifications HY Steel
HY-80 (80 ksi minimum yield, MIL-S-16216) is the baseline U.S. Navy submarine hull steel. HY-100 (100 ksi) and HY-130 (130 ksi, MIL-S-24371) are used where higher strength is required for deep-diving or advanced naval vessels.
NAVSEA MATERIAL QUALIFICATION
Materials must originate from NAVSEA-qualified manufacturers with full traceability, chemical analysis, mechanical testing, and Charpy impact testing. Weld procedure qualification and welder certification are mandatory for pressure hull fabrication.
