AMS 5644
AMS 5644 is the SAE Aerospace Material Specification for 17-7PH (UNS S17700) stainless steel wire. 17-7PH wire combines high fatigue strength with good corrosion resistance in spring applications, making it the standard aerospace spring wire for applications where 302/304 stainless springs do not provide adequate strength or fatigue life.
Wire per AMS 5644 is used in the Condition A (annealed) or cold-drawn state for coiling into springs, and then precipitation hardened after spring forming to develop final strength.
AMS5644 covers round wire in diameters from 0.004″ to 0.625″ in Condition A or cold-drawn. After spring forming, aging at 950–1050°F develops tensile strength from 200–250 ksi depending on diameter and drawn condition. Tolerances per wire diameter table in specification.
