TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOR AMS 5936
AMS 5936 specifies Custom 465 corrosion-resistant stainless steel in bars, wire, forgings, and forging stock. Custom 465 is a martensitic precipitation hardenable steel that has been specifically designed to meet the needs of applications requiring exceptionally high levels of both strength and corrosion resistance. The combination of 12% Chromium, 11% Nickel, 1.7% Titanium, and 1% Molybdenum in Custom 465 steel works in concert to deliver outstanding mechanical properties along with excellent resistance to atmospheric and corrosive environments.
For the specification AMS 5936, Custom 465 is melted using the state-of-the-art technique of Vacuum Induction Melting followed by Vacuum Consumable Electrode Remelting. This technique produces a material of exceptionally clean microstructure with minimal inclusions, which is critical in components of aerospace applications. The Custom 465 steel is then subjected to solution heat treatment, which can also be precipitation hardened to extremely high levels of strength by carefully controlling the aging treatment.
Applications of AMS 5936
- Aerospace structural fasteners and high-strength components
- Aircraft landing gear components and structural hardware
- High-performance shafts and precision machined parts
- Aerospace and defense mechanical systems requiring very high strength
What is Custom 465 Stainless Steel ?
Custom 465 of Carpenter Technology Corporation represent martensitic, age-hardenable stainless steel alloys. It is produced through patented processes that offer enhanced corrosion resistance, moderate strength, and excellent machinability. generally supplied in the annealed condition, and in most instances, no special treatment is required.
