AMS 5688 - 302 Stainless Steel Wire, Cold Drawn
AMS 5688 is a specification that is part of the SAE spec, and it covers 302 stainless steel wire that is in a cold drawn and annealed condition. This material is generally used for aerospace, medical, and industrial applications where you need high tensile properties, flexibility, and corrosion resistance.
Technical Overview
304 stainless steel wire, as per the specification AMS 5688, is manufactured with exact diameter tolerances, top-tier surface finish, and mechanical properties. This material provides superior fatigue strength and significant spring back, making it suitable for mechanical springs, fasteners, and safety wire forms.
Typical Chemical Composition:
- Chromium: 17.0–19.0%
- Nickel: 8.0–10.0%
- Carbon: ≤ 0.15%
- Manganese: ≤ 2.0%
- Silicon: ≤ 1.0%
What is 302 Stainless Steel ?
302 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that is available in the annealed and cold worked conditions. 302 is a higher carbon, earlier version of 304 stainless steel, and many 302 Stainless applications have switched to 304 with the improvements in melting technology. 302 Stainless is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic as a result of cold working.
