NACE MR0175 - Petroleum and Natural Gas Industries — Sour Service Material Requirements (301 SS)
NACE MR0175 (also published as ISO 15156) is the NACE International / ISO standard covering material requirements for equipment used in petroleum and natural gas production and processing environments containing hydrogen sulfide (H₂S). The standard specifies requirements that metallic materials must meet to avoid sulfide stress cracking, hydrogen-induced cracking, and stress-oriented hydrogen-induced cracking in sour service conditions.
For stainless steel materials including 301-grade, NACE MR0175 defines maximum allowable hardness and additional requirements based on the H₂S partial pressure and service conditions, ensuring reliable long-term service without hydrogen embrittlement failures in oil and gas processing equipment.
What is 301 Stainless steel ?
301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel based stainless steel that is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic when cold worked. The high strength and corrosion resistance of this grade of stainless steel makes it useful for a variety of applications.
Properties of NACE MR0175
Under 1/4 hard condition, 301 stainless steel offers a minimum of 125,000 PSI tensile strength and 75,000 PSI yield strength. It has a good balance between strength and formability. It remains non-magnetic after annealing but develops partial magnetism after undergoing cold work.
Typical Applications
301 stainless steel per AMS 5517 is commonly used in:
- Aircraft components and structural parts
- Springs, clips, and fasteners
- Automotive trim and hardware
- Architectural and industrial sheet applications
