304 Stainless Steel per AMS 5511
AMS 5511 defines 304L SS sheet and plate in the solution heat-treated and annealed condition. This material has excellent corrosion resistance and good weldability. This low-carbon (≤ 0.03%) chromium-nickel alloy has been formulated to resist sensitization and intergranular corrosion during welding and exposure to elevated temperatures.
Product Forms & Size Range of AMS 5511
304 Stainless Steel per AMS 5511 Plate Thickness ranges from 0.1875″ to 6.50″ Thick.
304 Stainless Steel per AMS 5511 Sheet Thicknesses range from 0.0010″ to .170″ Thick.
Overview of 304L Stainless Steel
304L, or UNS S30403, is the low-carbon version of the more common 304 stainless steel, or UNS S30400. It retains the chromium and nickel levels of 304, at 18 to 20 percent and 8 to 10.5 percent, respectively, but lowers the carbon level to prevent carbide precipitation. Annealed, it is non-magnetic, highly formable, and tough at all temperatures.
304L is the better material for welded parts, tanks, pressure vessels, and chemical processing applications, particularly where corrosive environments are involved, compared to the more heat-resistant 304H, or UNS S30409.
