AMS 5618 - 440C Stainless Steel Bars and Forgings
AMS 5618 is the SAE International standard for 440C grade bars and forgings produced via the consumable electrode vacuum melted (VIM-VAR) process. 440C grade is a high-carbon content martensitic grade of stainless steel containing higher carbon content than 440A and 440B grades. 440C grade has the highest hardness and wear resistance of all the martensitic grades.
Key Properties of AMS 5618
- Process: Consumable electrode vacuum melted for superior cleanliness
- Hardness: Up to 65 HRC (after heat treatment)
- Tensile Strength: ~285 ksi (1965 MPa) maximum
- Corrosion Resistance: Excellent against mild acids, alkalis & moisture
- Machinability: Fair in annealed condition; best with free-machining lubricants
- Magnetic Response: Fully magnetic in all conditions
What is 440C Stainless Steel ?
440C is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel that has slightly more carbon than 440A and 440B giving it the highest hardness of any martensitic stainless alloy. This grade has excellent wear resistance making it perfect as a bearing steel used as ball bearings and bearing races.
440 STAINLESS STEEL SPECIFICATIONS
440A Stainless Steel
440A is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel, AOD melted for refined quality and consistency. It contains slightly less carbon than 440B and 440C
440C Stainless Steel
440C is the hardest and most wear-resistant grade in the 440 series due to its highest carbon content. It achieves excellent dimensional stability and superior bearing performance after hardening.
