AMS-T-9046
AMS-T-9046, which was formerly known as MIL-T-9046, is a standard specification of the US military materials standard pertaining to titanium sheets, strips, and plates. The standard has its origin in a 1955 Department of Defense document intended to standardize titanium materials for use in aircraft and military equipment.
Since 1955, The Department of Defense has referred to Titanium Plate, Sheet, and Strip as MIL-T-9046. This specification tends to cause a lot of confusion for Tier 1 Aerospace Manufacturers and OEMs because it covers 20 different types of titanium, and several conditions within some of the alloys. The MIL-T-9046 specification was scheduled for cancellation in 1999 to transition over to the widely used AMS specifications. If you are working on a project that requires this Military Specification, please share with us what Composition and Revision Letter you are looking for so we can help you source the proper material.
What is 5Al-2.5Sn & ELI Titanium ?
5Al-2.5Sn is an alloy made up of 5% aluminum and 2.5% tin. It is a high-strength, corrosion-resistant alloy that is commonly used in the aerospace and defense industries. Grade 6 Ti-5Al-2.5Sn alloy has high service temperature of 480°C (896°F), medium strength, and excellent weldability and fabricability. This alloy has good oxidation resistance and microstructure stability; however it is not heat-treatable.
Applications of AMS-T-9046 Titanium
AMS-T-9046 titanium sheet, strip, and plate have historically been used in a wide range of aerospace and defense structures, including:
- Aircraft Structural Components : skins, panels, and structural sheet assemblies
- Aerospace Frames : structural plates used in aircraft fuselage and wing structures
- Military Systems : titanium sheet and plate components used in defense hardware
