PWA 1223 - 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo Titanium Alloy for Aerospace Applications
PWA 1223 is Pratt & Whitney’s material spec on 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo, a titanium alloy also known as Ti-6246 or 6-2-4-6. It is an alpha-beta titanium alloy designed for use in aerospace applications when maximum strength, fatigue life, and stability at high temperatures are required.
The spec is mostly on forged parts used in critical rotating engine components. 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo has more strength in large cross-sections when compared to more common titanium alloys like Ti-6Al-4V. 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo has better fracture toughness and creep resistance under long-term exposure to heat.
Applications of 6Al-2Sn-4Zr-6Mo per PWA 1223
The 6-2-4-6 titanium alloy defined in PWA 1223 is widely used in high-temperature and high-load aerospace environments. Its mechanical strength and resistance to fatigue make it particularly suitable for rotating engine components and structural applications.
Typical applications include:
- Compressor disks and blades in gas turbine engines
- Engine seals and high-temperature structural hardware
- Airframe components requiring high strength-to-weight ratio
- Critical aerospace components subjected to cyclic loading
