AMS 4985 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Investment Castings (HIP Optional, High Strength)
The AMS 4985 specification deals with the 6Al-4V titanium alloy when it is used as investment castings. It specifies castings with excellent mechanical properties, such as 130 ksi UTS, 120 ksi YS, and 6% elongation.
The 6Al-4V titanium alloy is available in annealed conditions. Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) is also available as required. HIP is a helpful process because it eliminates porosity, improves fatigue properties, and improves internal cleanliness, particularly when using AMS 4985.
Applications of AMS 4985 Titanium Alloy
AMS 4985 investment castings are widely used in industries where complex geometry and high performance are required:
- Aerospace: Structural components, brackets, and engine hardware
- Defense: High-performance cast parts for military systems
- Industrial: Precision components requiring strength and corrosion resistance
- Marine: Components exposed to aggressive environments
What is 6Al-4V Titanium ?
6Al-4V titanium, also known as Ti-6Al-4V or grade 5 titanium, remains the top titanium alloy in the aerospace industry. This is because it has been recognized for its strength-to-weight properties, corrosion resistance, and reliability in both ambient and elevated temperatures.
