AMS 4991 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Investment Castings (HIP, Controlled Discontinuities)
AMS 4991 specifies investment castings of 6Al-4V titanium alloy, using the Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) process, optionally followed by annealing. It has particular application in those situations where high integrity in the structure is required, and it specifies acceptance criteria in terms of four grades of discontinuity.
The use of the HIP process greatly improves the quality of the casting from inside, reducing porosity, improving fatigue resistance, and enhancing reliability. Coupled with the known performance characteristics of Ti-6Al-4V, this specification provides an attractive combination of mechanical, corrosion, and weight advantages.
