R-304 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy (Rockwell International)
R-304 is the Rockwell International Material Specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy, used in Rockwell aerospace programs including the Space Shuttle Orbiter, B-1 Lancer, and other defense programs where engineering drawings reference the R-304 designation.
Rockwell International’s aerospace divisions (now part of Boeing North American) used the R-prefix specification series for material procurement requirements on their military and space programs. R-304 material meets the chemistry and mechanical property requirements of the equivalent AMS specification while also satisfying Rockwell’s supplier qualification and certification requirements.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
