SS 8445 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Forgings (Sikorsky Aircraft)
SS 8445 is the Sikorsky Aircraft Specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy forgings, Dynamic Grade, used in Sikorsky helicopter rotor system components and dynamic structural assemblies. The Dynamic Grade designation indicates additional testing requirements for rotating and oscillating structural applications.
6Al-4V titanium is extensively used in Sikorsky helicopter designs for rotor hubs, swashplates, airframe frames, and skin panels. Its combination of high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance under cyclic helicopter loading conditions makes it the standard titanium alloy for rotorcraft structural applications.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
