AMS 5517 - 301 Stainless Steel 1/4 Hard
AMS 5517 describes the properties of 301 stainless steel that is available in the 1/4 Hard temper. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that is cold rolled to the 1/4 Hard condition, providing the steel with high strength, work hardening properties, while maintaining good ductility and corrosion resistance.
What is 301 Stainless steel ?
301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel based stainless steel that is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic when cold worked. The high strength and corrosion resistance of this grade of stainless steel makes it useful for a variety of applications.
Properties of AMS 5517
Under 1/4 hard condition, 301 stainless steel offers a minimum of 125,000 PSI tensile strength and 75,000 PSI yield strength. It has a good balance between strength and formability. It remains non-magnetic after annealing but develops partial magnetism after undergoing cold work.
Typical Applications
301 stainless steel per AMS 5517 is commonly used in:
- Aircraft components and structural parts
- Springs, clips, and fasteners
- Automotive trim and hardware
- Architectural and industrial sheet applications
