AMS 5901 - 301 Stainless Steel (Annealed)
The AMS 5901 specification includes 301 stainless steel in sheet and strip form, solution heat treated and annealed. It is a heat treatable, austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel that provides a combination of ductility and formability, and excellent corrosion resistance, suitable for use in deep drawing, forming, and welding operations in the aerospace and other industries.
Properties of AMS 5901
The 301 stainless steel, identified by AMS 5901, possesses a nominal content of 17% chromium and 7% nickel. This provides excellent oxidation and corrosion properties and enables cold working hardening. After annealing, the metal remains non-magnetic; however, partial magnetism may occur when subjected to cold working.
Key performance characteristics include:
- Excellent ductility and formability for shaping and stamping
- Strong weldability and machinability
- High tensile strength potential through cold reduction
- Good resistance to atmospheric and mild chemical corrosion
What is 301 Stainless Steel ?
301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel based stainless steel that is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic when cold worked. The high strength and corrosion resistance of this grade of stainless steel makes it useful for a variety of applications.
