AMS-QQ-S-766 for Stainless & Heat-Resisting Steel Plate, Sheet & Strip
AMS-QQ-S-766 (formerly QQ-S-766D) is a Federal Specification for stainless and heat-resisting steel plate, sheet, and strip of 300 and 400 series alloys. This specification of alloy finds extensive use in the aerospace and defense industries.
The then-applicable specification of QQ-S-766D, dated 30 July 1993, has long been replaced by more modern and relevant specifications from ASTM, namely A240, A666, and A693. Nevertheless, its use is still encountered in many legacy engineering drawings and defense procurements.
Overview of AMS-QQ-S-766
The AMS-QQ-S-766 standard specifies the chemical composition, mechanical properties, heat treatment processes, and surface finishing requirements for corrosion-resistant and high-temperature-resistant stainless steels.
Key points of the specification standard:
– It specifies the requirements for annealed and heat-treated sheets, plates, and strips.
– It includes requirements for both 300 series (austenitic) and 400 series (martensitic/ferritic) stainless steel.
– It specifies requirements for tensile properties, elongation, hardness, and corrosion resistance.
– It includes requirements for grain size and microstructures for high-temperature parts.
What is 301 Stainless steel ?
301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel based stainless steel that is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic when cold worked. The high strength and corrosion resistance of this grade of stainless steel makes it useful for a variety of applications.
GRADES COVERED UNDER AMS-QQ-S-766
300 SERIES
Austenitic stainless steels offering excellent corrosion resistance and formability.
400 SERIES
Lightly cold-worked for moderate strength with good ductility.
Certified Material for Critical Service
301 stainless steel is supplied as certified material for critical service, complete with mill test reports (MTRs) and traceability documentation. Fighter Jet Metals ensures that all 301 stainless steel products meet AMS, MIL, and NACE standards, guaranteeing reliability, safety, and performance in demanding aerospace, oil & gas, and industrial environments.
