NACE MR0103 - Materials Resistant to Sulfide Stress Cracking in Oilfield Equipment (301 SS)
NACE MR0103 is the NACE International Standard covering materials resistant to sulfide stress cracking for use in oilfield and refinery equipment exposed to hydrogen sulfide environments. This standard defines acceptable materials and hardness limits for equipment exposed to sour service conditions (H₂S-containing fluids), where susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement and sulfide stress cracking is a critical design concern.
For 301 stainless steel, NACE MR0103 compliance requires that the material meet maximum hardness limits and, in some tempers, additional requirements to ensure resistance to sulfide stress cracking in sour service applications such as oil and gas processing equipment, valves, and piping systems.
What is 301 Stainless steel ?
301 is an austenitic chromium-nickel based stainless steel that is non-magnetic in the annealed condition but becomes magnetic when cold worked. The high strength and corrosion resistance of this grade of stainless steel makes it useful for a variety of applications.
Properties of NACE MR0103
Under 1/4 hard condition, 301 stainless steel offers a minimum of 125,000 PSI tensile strength and 75,000 PSI yield strength. It has a good balance between strength and formability. It remains non-magnetic after annealing but develops partial magnetism after undergoing cold work.
Typical Applications
301 stainless steel per AMS 5517 is commonly used in:
- Aircraft components and structural parts
- Springs, clips, and fasteners
- Automotive trim and hardware
- Architectural and industrial sheet applications
