302 Stainless Steel - Austenitic Chromium-Nickel Alloy
302 Stainless Steel is a chromium-nickel austenitic metal that is famous for its corrosion resistance, strength, and ductility. It is used in both annealed and cold-worked conditions, making it an extremely useful metal for numerous forming operations.
Essentially, it is an older, high-carbon version of the 304 grade, but the Type 302 provides the same level of corrosion resistance as the 304, but with a slightly increased tensile strength due to the carbon present. With the advances made in the melting and refining process, the applications have moved from the 302 to the 304, but the 302 is used for the forming and spring operations.
Product Forms & Size Range

Technical Overview of 302 Stainless Steel
Stainless steel 302 displays high resistance to oxidation and corrosion in a wide range of environments, including industrial, chemical, and marine. When annealed, 302 stainless steel is non-magnetic, but it is magnetic after cold working.
Key properties:
- Composition: ~18% Chromium, ~8% Nickel, 0.15% Carbon max
- Tensile Strength (annealed): ~85 ksi
- Tensile Strength (cold worked): up to 200 ksi
- Excellent formability and drawing characteristics
- Non-hardenable by heat treatment; strengthened only by cold working
Applications
- Aerospace components and fasteners
- Springs and wire forms
- Automotive and industrial hardware
- Food processing equipment
- Chemical processing and marine environments
