304 Stainless Steel per AMS 5639
The AMS 5639 calls for the composition to be 304 stainless steel in the solution heat treated condition, which is appropriate for bars, wire, forgings, tubing, and rings. The AMS 5639 describes a versatile corrosion-resistant austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel used in many applications in the aerospace industry, as well as in other industrial and marine environments where strength, formability, and durability are
Product Forms & Size Range of AMS 5639

Overview of 304 / 304L Stainless Steel
304 (UNS S30400) and 304L (UNS S30403) are the most commonly used stainless steels in the 300 series. They have a good balance of 18-20% Cr and 8-10.5% Ni content. This provides good resistance to oxidation and exposure to the atmosphere. Annealed 304/304L is non-magnetic with good formability.
The main differences between 304/304L grades are based on carbon content:
- 304L – Low carbon content minimizes carbide formation during welding.
- 304H – Used for parts requiring good strength at elevated temperatures.
- 304 – Used for machined parts, bars, etc., where welding is not a major issue.
