AMS 5647 is used for solution heat treated 304L stainless steel, which is suitable for bars, wire, forgings, mechanical tubing, and rings. It is an austenitic chromium-nickel alloy with 19% chromium, 9.5% nickel, and low carbon. It is used for its good corrosion resistance, weldability, and fabricability.

Overview of 304L Stainless Steel
304L (UNS S30403) is the low-carbon version of the traditional 304 stainless steel (UNS S30400). It reduces the risk of sensitization and intergranular corrosion in welding or long-term heat exposure by reducing the carbon content to 0.03% or less while retaining the same Cr-Ni content as the traditional 304 grade for its balanced properties of strength, ductility, and corrosion resistance.
This grade of stainless steel is non-magnetic in the annealed condition with excellent mechanical properties and resistance to oxidation in the atmosphere as well as many organic and inorganic chemicals.

– AMS 5639 (304): The standard carbon content version for use in applications where welding is not necessary.
– AMS 5647 (304L): The low-carbon content version for use in parts that must be welded and where corrosion is a problem.
