AMS 5880 - 440C Stainless Steel Bars and Forgings
The AMS 5880 is a specification of SAE International that refers to bars and forgings of 440C stainless steel used in bearings that require extreme hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance. This steel is produced through a premium melting technique called Vacuum Induction Melting followed by Vacuum Arc Remelting, which provides high purity, cleanliness, and consistency, all of which are important for aerospace and high-speed rotating equipment.
Typical Applications of AMS 5880
AMS 5880 440C Stainless Steel is widely used in:
- Aircraft bearings and bearing races
- Aerospace fasteners and bushings
- Pump shafts, valve components, and actuators
- High-performance industrial and turbine parts
- Precision mechanical assemblies and surgical instruments
What is 440C Stainless Steel
440C is a high carbon martensitic stainless steel that has slightly more carbon than 440A and 440B giving it the highest hardness of any martensitic stainless alloy. This grade has excellent wear resistance making it perfect as a bearing steel used as ball bearings and bearing races.
440 STAINLESS STEEL SPECIFICATIONS
440A Stainless Steel
440A is a high-carbon martensitic stainless steel, AOD melted for refined quality and consistency. It contains slightly less carbon than 440B and 440C
440C Stainless Steel
440C is the hardest and most wear-resistant grade in the 440 series due to its highest carbon content. It achieves excellent dimensional stability and superior bearing performance after hardening.
