TECHNICAL INFORMATION FOR A286 PER MSRR 6688
MSRR 6688 is a material specification given by Rolls-Royce for A286 stainless steel, an iron-nickel-chromium alloy designed to withstand corrosion and heat. It derives additional strength and enhanced oxidation resistance from molybdenum and titanium, which also enable the material to withstand high temperatures over long periods of exposure.
As an austenitic precipitation-hardenable stainless steel, A286, as per the specification given in the MSRR 6688, resists mechanical exposure up to 1300 °F (704 °C). The combination of strength, oxidation resistance, and processability of A286 makes the material a popular selection for aerospace engine and turbine parts.
Is A286 a Stainless Steel?
Some companies list A286 under Nickel and some companies list A286 under Stainless Steel. Ultimately, It is an iron-nickel-chromium alloy with additions of molybdenum and titanium making it a super alloy that is in between those categories. As one of the austenitic alloys it maintains good strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 1300ºF. Due to its high strength and excellent fabrication characteristics it performs like a Nickel alloy but has a similar density to that of Stainless Steel. Because of these characteristics, A286 is one of the most popular high temperature alloys.
Rolls Royce specification MSRR 6688
As a Tier 1 Aerospace company, Boeing holds its subcontractors to the same standards by ensuring they source material per MSRR 6688 from approved sources. This creates accountability and ensures the highest quality standards are achieved in the manufacturing process. SABRe (Supplier Management System Requirements) is the supplier-facing element of the Rolls-Royce Management System and is applicable to all suppliers or partners who supply products and / or services to Rolls-Royce contracts / purchase orders.
