316 Stainless Steel per AMS 5648
AMS 5648 is a specification for 316 stainless steel with a focus on resistance to corrosion and heat. It covers product forms such as bars, wire, forgings, mechanical tubing, rings, and stock for forgings or flash welded rings in solution heat treated conditions. This standard applies to austenitic stainless steels with chromium, nickel, and molybdenum alloys that meet the demands of challenging industries such as aerospace, oil and gas production, chemical processing, and heavy equipment industries.
Applications Of AMS 5648
In the aerospace industry, structural bars, forgings, and mechanical tubing experience corrosive and/or high-temperature environments.
In the oil and gas industry, drill collars, fasteners, and forgings experience the harsh environment in offshore, subsea, and sour service environments with exposure to chlorides.
In the chemical and petrochemical industry, vessels, supports and forgings, and equipment experience exposure to acids, chlorides, and high-temperature environments.
In the industrial machinery industry, load-carrying bars, shafts, and mechanical tubing experience exposure to corrosive environments and thermal cycling.
In the marine and power industry, structural parts, mounting rings, and forgings experience exposure to corrosive environments in seawater.
What is 316 Stainless Steel ?
316 Stainless Steel is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304 Stainless, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments
