AMS 5690 Stainless Steel Wire
AMS 5690 describes a corrosion- and heat-resistant stainless steel wire of the 316 family, used for aerospace and industrial applications where stainless steel wire is required. Unlike AMS 5653 and AMS 5648, which describe stainless steel bars and forgings, AMS 5690 is more specific to stainless steel wire products that require very specific alloy composition and heat treatment.
AMS 5690 Overview
The specifications for the austenitic stainless steel wire, with a chemical composition centered at chromium at approximately 17%, nickel at approximately 12%, and molybdenum at approximately 2.5%, can be found in the specifications outlined in AMS 5690. This is similar to the traditional chemical composition of the 316 stainless steel alloy, which is known for its excellent corrosion resistance.
The wire is in a solution-annealed state, with the option of other processes to achieve the best corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. This is similar to the specifications outlined in ASTM A580 and ASTM A313 for the 316 wire, and the specifications outlined in AMS 5690 can overlap with these specifications for stainless wires.
What is 316 Stainless Steel ?
316 Stainless Steel is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304 Stainless, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments
