ACS-MRS-1204 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Forging for Aerospace Applications
ACS-MRS-1204 is Northrop Grumman’s material specification for 6Al-4V titanium and is used for titanium alloy forgings. The specification has also been referred to as MRS-1204 or MRS1204 in some engineering notes. The specification is used for aerospace parts that require superior strength, fatigue resistance, and reliability during high-stress applications.
The ACS-MRS-1204 titanium specification is used for forged titanium alloy parts that contain 6Al-4V, also known as Grade 5 titanium. This alloy is an alpha-beta titanium alloy that contains 6% aluminum and 4% vanadium. The alloy has good properties, including tensile strength, fracture toughness, and resistance to creep. The alloy is also light and has good properties for aerospace applications, where weight reduction is critical.
Northrop Grumman ACS-MRS-1204
Northrop Grumman is an Aerospace and Defense company famous for the B-2 Spirit Bomber, and more recently its unmanned aircraft RQ-4.
Like other Major Tier 1 Aerospace companies, Northrop Grumman has special quality approvals for the procurement of Titanium. ACS-MRS-1204 is a quality specification for 6Al-4V for TITANIUM ALLOY FORGING. Some engineers will omit ACS when calling out MRS-1204 or MRS1204 altogether.
Applications of 6Al-4V per ACS-MRS-1204
Its combination of strength, fatigue resistance, and corrosion performance makes it suitable for:
- Aircraft structural components and airframe hardware
- Rotating engine parts such as disks and hubs
- Critical forgings requiring high strength-to-weight ratios
- Military aircraft and unmanned systems components
