DMS 2327 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy Plate (Boeing Long Beach, Recrystallized Annealed, High Fracture Toughness)
DMS 2327 is the Boeing Long Beach Division Material Specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy plate in the recrystallized annealed (RA) condition, qualified for high fracture toughness and damage-tolerant structural applications. The recrystallized annealed microstructure produces a more equiaxed grain structure than conventional mill-annealed 6Al-4V, providing superior fracture toughness (KIc) and improved resistance to fatigue crack growth — critical properties for primary structure designed under damage tolerance criteria.
Plate per DMS 2327 is used on Boeing Long Beach programs where engineering drawings require the RA condition for damage-tolerant design, particularly in thick structural plates for wing and fuselage primary structure on C-17 and other programs where fracture toughness is a specified acceptance criterion. The RA condition balances acceptable tensile strength with the improved toughness needed for FAA-certified damage-tolerant structure.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
