MMS 1233 - 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy (Recrystallized Annealed) (Lockheed Martin)
MMS 1233 is the Lockheed Martin Material Specification for 6Al-4V Titanium Alloy in the recrystallized annealed (RA) condition. The recrystallized annealed condition produces a refined, equiaxed microstructure that provides enhanced fracture toughness and improved fatigue crack growth resistance compared to conventional mill-annealed 6Al-4V, meeting Lockheed Martin’s damage-tolerant design requirements for primary structure on F-35 Lightning II, F-22 Raptor, and other Lockheed Martin programs.
Material per MMS 1233 satisfies Lockheed Martin’s supplier qualification, NDT, and traceability requirements in addition to the RA chemistry and toughness requirements. The RA condition is specified on Lockheed Martin engineering drawings where fracture toughness is a primary acceptance criterion, differentiating MMS 1233 from the standard annealed MMS 1224 (bars) and MMS 1228 (plate) specifications.
6Al-4V is recommended for use at temperatures from -350° to 750°F (-210° to 400°C). Applications outside this temperature range are possible in certain situations. The alloy is weldable. Complex shapes can be made via hot forming. It machines like an austenitic stainless steel.
