INCONEL 706 (UNS N09706)
INCONEL 706 is a precipitation-hardenable nickel-iron-chromium alloy developed for its outstanding combination of high mechanical properties, oxidation resistance, and outstanding formability. INCONEL 706 is similar to alloy 718, sharing its high strength, excellent creep resistance, while offering better machinability and formability, making the former a popular option for aircraft, power plant, turbine, etc. projects.
This material excels in maintaining its creep-rupture strength up to a high temperature of 1300°F (704°C) and has stability in structure even under long periods of exposure to high temperatures. Its content of nickel, chromium, and iron ensures good oxidation and corrosion properties, and the aluminum and titanium in its composition ensure age hardening, thereby maintaining strength under stress.
Technical Overview of INCONEL 706
- Nominal Composition: Nickel (40-45%), Iron (bal.), Chromium (15-18%), Titanium, Aluminum, and Niobium.
- Microstructure: Precipitation-hardened gamma prime (γ’) and gamma double prime (γ”) phases ensure high strength and temperature resistance.
- Melting Range: Approximately 2550-2625°F (1399-1440°C).
- Forms Available: Sheet, Plate, Bar, Forgings, and Rings.
Key Features:
- Excellent machinability compared to INCONEL 718.
- Resistance to stress-corrosion cracking in turbine and exhaust environments.
- High fatigue and tensile strength after aging treatment.
- Stable microstructure under cyclic thermal exposure.
Applications of INCONEL 706
- Gas Turbine Disks and Compressor Components – High strength and oxidation resistance under cyclic loads.
- Aircraft Engine Mounts and Rings – Excellent fatigue and thermal stability.
- Land-Based Turbine Systems – Long service life under high-temperature oxidation.
