316 Stainless Steel per AMS 5573
The AMS 5573 is a specification for a corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant seamless stainless steel tube made out of 316 stainless steel, where strength is required in tough conditions (SAE 30316). The specification is for corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant seamless tubes made out of austenitic chromium-nickel stainless steel with the addition of molybdenum for enhanced corrosion resistance as well as mechanical properties at high temperatures.
What Is 316 Stainless Steel?
316 Stainless Steel is the standard molybdenum-bearing grade, second in importance to 304 amongst the austenitic stainless steels. The molybdenum gives 316 better overall corrosion resistant properties than 304 Stainless, particularly higher resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride environments
What Is 316 Stainless Steel?
AMS 5573 tubing is used in those applications where there is a need for excellent corrosion resistance as well as good performance in high-temperature conditions. It can be found in several areas, including the following:
- Aerospace systems: instrumentation tubing, hydraulic lines, fuel lines, and structural parts that are used in corrosive environments.
- Oil and gas: seamless tubing used in sour service, platforms, and equipment where there is a risk of chloride-induced corrosion.
- Chemical and petrochemical processing: heat exchangers, reactors, and piping systems used in harsh environments where there is exposure to high temperatures.
- Marine and power generation: tubing and equipment that experience exposure to seawater as well as exposure to high-temperature steam.
