321 Stainless Steel per AMS 5510
AMS 5510 describes 321 stainless steel in sheet and plate form in the solution heat treated (annealed) condition. Titanium-stabilized chromium-nickel austenitic stainless steel exhibits superior resistance to intergranular corrosion, improved oxidation resistance up to 1500°F (816°C), and increased creep and stress-rupture properties when compared to 304 stainless steel.
AMS 5510 Characteristics
- Heat Treatment: Supplied solution-annealed per AMS 5510 for maximum corrosion resistance.
- Oxidation Resistance: Continuous service up to 1500 °F (816 °C).
- Strength: Superior creep and stress-rupture performance compared with 304 SS.
- Formability: Excellent for sheet forming, press forming, and deep drawing.
- Weldability: Suitable for fusion and resistance welding methods.
Applications Of AMS 5510
321 stainless steel, as defined by AMS 5510, is the first choice for hot environments where scaling and sensitization are of concern. It’s often used in:
– Aerospace industry: components for jet engines, including exhaust systems, manifolds, after-burners, liners, heat shields, and turbine cowls.
– Chemical processing: heat exchangers, vessels, and piping systems that are repeatedly exposed to heat.
– Automotive/motorsport: exhaust headers, catalytic converters, and other components that are exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations.
– Power generation: boiler casings, turbine ducts, where oxidation and creep are of concern.
