MIL-T-8808 - Stainless Steel Tubing, Corrosion-Resistant
The military standard for stainless steel tubing, MIL-T-8808, covered seamless, welded, and drawn types that are annealed. The standard set the benchmark for aerospace and defense applications. The material had to possess corrosion resistance, mechanical strength, and dimensional stability.
The current equivalent standards for MIL-T-8808 are AMS 5556 and AMS 5557. These two standards are updates on 321 stainless steel tubing. The updates provide enhanced corrosion and heat resistance, as well as more stringent tolerances, for hydraulic and fuel system applications.
Superseding AMS Specifications
The following AMS standards replaced MIL-T-8808:
- AMS 5556: Seamless hydraulic tubing, 321 stainless steel
- AMS 5557: Welded hydraulic tubing, 321 stainless steel
These AMS specifications offer modern quality assurance, consistent mechanical properties, and improved oxidation resistance, making them the preferred standard in current aerospace applications.
