321 Stainless Steel per AMS 5576
AMS 5576 specifies the properties of 321 stainless steel welded tubing in solution heat-treated conditions. This titanium-stabilized austenitic stainless steel has superior resistance to oxidation up to 1500 °F (816 °C). It also has good intergranular corrosion resistance and good mechanical stability. The addition of titanium provides a safety factor in the prevention of chromium carbide precipitation. This maintains its resistance to corrosion even after welding and during long-term high-temperature use.
Applications of AMS 5576
The choice of AMS 5576 321 stainless steel tubing is based on its high thermal stability, oxidation resistance, and weld integrity. This material is used in situations where these properties will be most important. The uses of the material include:
– Aerospace: Engine bleed air ducts, exhaust manifolds, and hydraulic return lines.
– Automotive & Motorsport: Turbocharger tubing, catalytic converter shells, and high-temperature exhausts.
– Chemical Processing: Heat exchanger coils, process tubing, and piping for corrosive gases and acids.
– Power & Energy: Boiler tubes, turbine casings, and reheater lines.
– Marine: Welded assemblies that must resist brine and high temperatures.
What is 321 Stainless Steel ?
