347 Stainless Steel per AMS 5558
AMS 5558 is the specification for welded tubes that are constructed out of 347 stainless steel, in the thin wall, solution heat treated form. This type of tube is utilized when maximum resistance is needed in an environment that is both corrosive and has high temperatures. 347 stainless is a chromium-nickel alloy that also has niobium (columbium) and tantalum as stabilizers, giving maximum resistance against corrosion, as well as oxidation and thermal fatigue.
This alloy is utilized for aerospace hydraulic systems, chemical processing, exhaust manifolds, etc., that need maximum performance from 800°F to 1500°F (427°C to 816°C).
Applications of AMS 5558
- Aerospace exhaust ducts, manifolds, and turbine shrouds
- Hydraulic and fuel systems requiring thin-wall welded tubing
- Heat exchangers and high-temperature process piping
- Chemical plant equipment and refinery tubing
- Jet engine bleed air and afterburner components
What is 347 Stainless Steel ?
347 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel stabilized by additions of columbium (plus tantalum) and has slightly improved corrosion resistance over type 321 stainless steel in strongly oxidizing environments. It is preferable for aqueous and low-temperature environments due to its good resistance to intergranular attack. Both 347 and 321 offer good resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking, encountered in oil refineries.
