347 Stainless Steel per AMS 5646
The AMS 5646 specification requires 347 stainless steel in bar, forging, and ring forms in the solution heat-treated condition. 347 is a chromium-nickel stainless steel with niobium (columbium), tantalum stabilizers, which is formulated to resist intergranular corrosion, oxidation, and carbide precipitation in high-temperature environments.
AMS 5646 OverView
347 stainless steel under AMS 5646 maintains its good mechanical properties and structural integrity even after prolonged exposure to high temperatures. The addition of columbium and tantalum helps maintain stability in the material and prevents sensitization and chromium depletion after welding and multiple thermal exposures.
This alloy is widely used in aircraft exhaust systems, gas turbine components, and chemical processing equipment, where high creep strength and corrosion resistance are critical between 800°F and 1500°F (427°C–816°C).
What is 347 Stainless Steel ?
347 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel stabilized by additions of columbium (plus tantalum) and has slightly improved corrosion resistance over type 321 stainless steel in strongly oxidizing environments. It is preferable for aqueous and low-temperature environments due to its good resistance to intergranular attack. Both 347 and 321 offer good resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking, encountered in oil refineries.
