347 Stainless Steel per AMS 5575
AMS 5575 describes welded tubing made from 347 stainless steel that is in the solution heat treated state, which is used where corrosion and heat resistance are significant factors. 347 Stainless Steel is an austenitic chromium-nickel steel stabilized by the addition of columbium and tantalum that resists intergranular corrosion and carbide precipitation during exposure to high temperature or where welding occurs.
AMS 5575 Overview
347 stainless steel, as per the specifications given in AMS 5575, has its operating range tuned to be used in the 800°F to 1500°F (427°C to 816°C) bracket. It maintains its high strength along with good ductility in the process, while at the same time it can resist oxidation. The addition of columbium and tantalum stabilizers ensures that the alloy has good microstructural stability along with a low chance of sensitization after the process of welding.
It has the same corrosion resistance as that of 321 stainless steel, though it has a better performance in oxidizing environments along with a high resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking.
What is is 347 Stainless Steel ?
347 stainless steel is an austenitic stainless steel stabilized by additions of columbium (plus tantalum) and has slightly improved corrosion resistance over type 321 stainless steel in strongly oxidizing environments. It is preferable for aqueous and low-temperature environments due to its good resistance to intergranular attack. Both 347 and 321 offer good resistance to polythionic acid stress corrosion cracking, encountered in oil refineries.
